One month prior to the presidential nomination, the main election fight
is supposed to be unfolded between the second and third presidents. It
is not important whether Robert Kocharyan will be nominated or will
support someone: the important is that "third figures" won't be
allowed into this game.
The fact that the intrigue will be in place until the very last moment
means that the second and third presidents, either by default, or on
purpose, agreed to leave out all other potential candidates. When
it will be little time left for nominations, they will voice their
decision and will decide the outcome of the campaign together.
It is evident that the two presidents are engaged in such a game. It is
clear that everyone, including the political figures see their game,
and they can correct it. But, apparently, everyone is happy with the
game, and there is no strong politician in Armenia to be able to hinder
it. As Robert Kocharyan once said: there are no men in Armenia...
Later, when everything is over, the political figures will say that
those from Karabakh again took everything in their hands, that they
don't want to leave the power and support each other. But, no one
will ask what they personally did to prevent such development.
The issue on the Karabakh clan is disputable because if Robert
Kocharyan, mentally, is a Karabakh political figure, Serzh Sargsyan
prefers a wider image. He does not refuse his Karabakh origin but
does not advertise it either. In the Armenian perception, both of
these figures are still "foreigners" but there is no one "local"
to become a worthy rival.
It's not about intelligence or other qualities: there are many decent
people in Armenia and even in politics. The case is their relation
to the politics which is seen as a calculated risk, or adventure
in the best sense of the word, it's the pursuit of victory, not the
original justification of their future defeats. The question is not
the origin of the man, it's his ambitions, the determination to take
responsibility, the ability to make decisions.
Opposition members in Armenia show enviable indecision to take a
decision. For example, the idea on the joint opposition candidate
was "strangled" by Aharon Adibekyan, who said Gagik Tsarukyan is the
potential joint candidate. Actually, he teased the opposition and gave
a tough assessment to it. None of the oppositional figures turned out
courageous enough to show determination and issue his or her ambitions.
As to the origins, perhaps, many Armenian political figures are
psychologically held back because they were born or grew up in foreign
countries. Armenians in foreign countries, even in the richest ones,
always have to repress their ambitions, especially, political ones.
This is the reason of Vartan Oskanian's justifying manner of speaking,
against whom an accusation on political grounds was fabricated, the
same goes for Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who at the most decisive moment,
decided to enter dialogue with Serzh Sargsyan or to create the joint
election staff with the PAP.
The presidential elections in Armenia may end as soon as the
nominations are over. This is the case when everything will be decided
before the elections. Even if Kocharyan runs, and a real fight is
unfolded between him and Serzh Sargsyan, and one of them wins, for
the Armenian society, it will mean lack of choice.
