OPPOSITION ALLIANCE TO RALLY AFTER TER-PETROSYAN DECIDES PRESIDENCY PLANS

The opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) will appoint a date
for a rally after Levon Ter-Petrosyan decides the format of his
running for presidency, says a member of the alliance.
"These are simultaneous processes, and the rally will be held
once there is a decision," Lyudmila Sargsyan of the ANC faction in
parliament told Tert.am on Monday.
Asked about the present situation which looks somewhat uncertain,
Sarsgsyan said, "I think the uncertainty will be cleared up very soon,
so there is no need to make haste. There is not yet any clarity on the
[political] arena, so I am not sure whether those who have said they
are uncertain will nominate themselves. The process hasn't reached
its peak, so I don't think Ter-Petrosyan has to hurry.
As to why the ANC lawmakers reacted differently to an interstate
agreement on stationing military infrastructure units on the territory
of the CSTO member states, Sargsyan answered, "The [Armenian National]
Congress is a very democratic structure, with everyone having his or
her opinion on the issue. So none of tried to exert pressure on any
other member," she said.
Under the agreement Armenia is not allowed to station a non-member
state's military subdivision unit on its territory in case of
objections by other member states.
Of the four lawmakers of the opposition alliance, only two - Sargsyan
and ex military prosecutor Gagik Jhangiryan - voted in favor of the
agreement in the National Assembly. The secretary of the faction,
Aram Manukyan, and Nikol Pashinyan voted against.
The Social Democrat Hnchakyan Party of which Sargsyan is the leader
had earlier appealed to the Armenians in Russia to vote in favor of
Vladimir Putin during the presidential election.
