NOT GEORGIA BUT THE WHOLE REGION IS A "CRADLE OF WINE", ARCHEOLOGIST THINKS

The registration by Georgia of the brand "Georgia - cradle of wine"
in the EU has caused bewilderment of Armenian archaeologists.

As the head of the Armenian part of the expedition to the "Areni-1"
cave, Boris Gasparyan, said at today's press-conference, the EU did
not have a right to declare Georgia like "a cradle of wine" grounding
on the present borders of the South Caucasus countries. He said that
not a specific country but the whole region may have this title,
    including Iran, Turkey and Syria.

He recalled that ancient grape stones were found just at the territory
of Iran. As for Armenia, ancient evidences of wine making were found
just at Areni cave, which were more than 6 thsd years old. He said
that it is wrong to call this or that country the native land of wine
making, as the findings refer to the times when the present state
borders did not exist. Taking this into consideration, the EU should
confess that its decision on the brand "Georgia is a cradle of wine"
    is invalid, he said.
