FOWL PLAY: EGG PRODUCERS AGAIN TURNING OUT SUSPICIOUS PRODUCT

The most controversial sector of the Armenian food market of recent
times - egg production - has once again caught public attention this
time with "super-fresh" eggs with "future" production dates that have
    appeared in Yerevan shops.

Since Monday (October 8) Armenian mass media have been circulating
photos of Arax poultry factory eggs with production dates claiming
October 12, when the date hasn't even arrived yet.

Nonetheless, Arax's delivery manager Arman Karyan assured ArmeniaNow
that they have no knowledge of the "time machine" and have turned to
the police to investigate the matter.

"Those eggs with Arax labels are not authentic Arax production. It's
simply impossible. Somebody is messing with our company reputation,"
    says Karyan.

However, this is not the first case Arax is involved in a controversy.

Earlier this year, January 29-labeled eggs showed up on shelves on
    January 27.

The egg market in general has had a recent series of health
violations. Most recently, monitoring found that expired eggs from
major producers were on sale in Yerevan shops.

Babken Pipoyan, head of the State Food Safety Service at the
agriculture ministry, told ArmeniaNow that they have received
information about those cases and have taken respective measures.

"Unfortunately it is impossible to have hens lay already labeled
eggs, so there have been numerous cases of wrong production-expiration
dates. The solution is a structural one - keep the product realization
net under constant strict control; in such cases the products are
sent back and eliminated," says Pipoyan.
