When determining its export policy, Armenia should resolve the natural
conflict between the ore-mining and agrarian spheres, as the further
development of the ore-mining field is fraught with reduction of the
output of the ecologically friendly agricultural products, Gagik
Makaryan, Head of the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia,
said at today's press conference.
He pointed out the findings of the Union's survey about the
diversification of Armenian import and export in 2007-11, according to
which, in 2008-11 the copper concentrate export increased from $101.6
mln to $260.5 mln, and blister copper - from $63.2 mln to $114.6 mln.
Over this period the export of fresh and dried grapes grew from $1 mln
to $6.8 mln, and the export of other fresh fruits - from $2.4 mln to
$7.6 mln. In 2011 the export of the ore-mining products in the total
volume of export of 25 groups of goods made up 67%, and the share of
agricultural products (including processed products) - 13-14%.
According to the survey, which also used the data of the World Trade
Organization, the aggregate volume of import of 25 groups of goods in
2007-11 made up about 50% of the total volume of imported goods (in
2011 - $2.1 bln out of $4.1 bln), and only in 2009 this index made up
42%. The aggregate volume of export of 25 groups of goods grew from 81%
(2007) to 88% (2011) ($1.17 bln out of $1.32 bln), whereas during the
Soviet times and over the first two years of Armenia's independence
the export of these 25 groups of goods was no more than 44% of the
aggregate export. Makaryan thinks that the findings of the survey
demonstrate slight improvement in export diversification. They also
show that large enterprises strengthen their export positions, and
small and medium ones are almost unable to export their products.
He said that a month ago an Export Stimulation Department was launched
in the Union. The Department provides free advisory services concerning
the export of specific goods to certain markets. Makaryan also stressed
the importance of holding of proper laboratory examinations of food
products. Such a possibility will be created in Armenia in 2013,
and the Union may use its ties with European laboratories for this
purpose. He added that the specified Department is able serve up to
10 enterprises daily.
