YEREVAN, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) - Armenia's capital and largest city Yerevan
opened its first bikeway on Wednesday, offering residents a new way
to get round heavy traffic in the city.
The 2.5-km bikeway is "a pilot project" and the city is likely to offer
"more bikeways in the future," Yerevan's Transportation Department
chief Henrik Navasardyan told Xinhua.
The city will also use the bikeway to measure how it could alleviate
traffic congestion in Yerevan, where it could take 1.5-2 hours to
get to work from home, he said.
Residents said Yerevan can become a city comfortable for bicycles if
all the basic parts of city are connected by such bikeways.
"It is a very good initiative," a man on his bike said. "I use 25
minutes to walk to my workplace, but by bike it would be 5 minutes.
But, unfortunately, there is no bikeway to my workplace."
They also said the bikeway is inconvenient because it's on the same
pavement where people walk.
The number of people riding bikes in Yerevan is increasing, but common
people still find it quite unaffordable to get good bikes.
