POSTANJYAN: "OLIGARCHIC" PARTY CAN'T HAVE "OPPOSITION" CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT

Zaruhi Postanjyan, an outspoken opposition lawmaker with the
Heritage faction, does not see the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP)
as an opposition, nor thinks this force can field an 'opposition'
candidate in next year's presidential election.
The lawmaker expressed this opinion in an interview with a local daily.
The talk about the PAP nominating its own candidate was fueled this
week after a statement by the party's lawmaker and former Minister of
Foreign Affairs Vartan Oskanian, who said he'd be willing to stand for
president. Oskanian is now under investigation on money laundering
charges that are widely believed to be a retribution for his and
PAP's increasingly opposition stance ahead of the February polls.
In an interview with Aravot, Postanjyan said on the matter: "Today the
PAP cannot represent the opposition with a joint candidate or even
with a separate candidate. They, as a party, certainly have their
separate candidate, but I am convinced that this candidate cannot
be the opposition candidate. A party whose members are oligarchs
cannot oppose the government. The oligarchy emerged during the rule
of today's government and it is part of this government. Therefore,
there can be no nomination of an opposition candidate in this format."
Founder and leader of the Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian is a likely
candidate in the 2013 presidential election.
