The Environmental Public Alliance has come out for resignation of
Armenian Nature Protection Minister Aram Haroutyunyan. EcoLur NGO
reports that 48 members of the Alliance joined the statement, except
Chairman of the Association for Sustainable Human Development NGO
Karine Danielyan and Chairman of Burg NGO Arman Vermishyan.
The statement of the Alliance reads: "The Environmental Public
Alliance expresses its mistrust in Nature Protection Minister Aram
Haroutyunyan and demands his resignation". The Alliance thinks that
the new minister should be non-partisan to avoid any political
pressure and should have professional skills in the sphere of
environmental protection. Given the Aarhus Convention on Access to
Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to
Justice in Environmental Matters, the opinion of the concerned public
should be taken into account when appointing a new minister.
This decision has been approved by green activists, namely Mariam
Sukhudyan and lawyer Mary Khachatryan. The activists point out on
Facebook that it is necessary to bring the minister to responsibility
for office abuse and to demand compensation for the damage caused to
nature.
To recall, the environmentalists and activists expressed their
indignation at the cases of poaching in the Khosrov reserve. After
disclosure of the facts of illegal hunting, the director of the
reserve was dismissed by the order of Minister Haroutyunyan.
