Former foreign minister of Nagorno Karabakh Arman Melikyan hailed
the recognition of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic by the Australia's
largest state - New South Wales, considering it remarkable to take
place on the eve of Paris meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia
and Azerbaijan.
"I think in any case the formation of certain public opinion over
the issue in Australia, even on the level of the state, is important,
I hope it will be useful and will contribute to the extension of the
process of international recognition of Nagorno Karabakh," he said,
speaking to Tert.am.
Melikyan said he does not know whether the Australian legislation
allows international cooperation with foreign countries, but expressed
opinion that New South Wales may have that opportunity.
"At least on that level I consider cooperation between this state
and Artsakh [Karabakh] realistic," he said, adding that it is not
the first case. There are French and US towns which cooperate with
Stepanakert, Karabakh's capital.
Asked about the possible factors that made the Australian state do
it, Melikyan said they can be different. "Australia is not a state
Armenia knows much of. There may be domestic factors like the work
of the Armenian community, or certain international ones," he said.
"Of course there are some inner political and international factors. I
would not like to downgrade the fact but it should not be overestimated
as well. It is a positive process and the results should be used,"
he said.
Asked to comment on Azerbaijan's behavior, NK ex-FM said he does not
think they will come to terms with it, but they cannot do any serious
thing about it either.
