Very few of the state institutions have been accommodated to the
people with disabilities, Armen Alaverdyan, chairman of Unison NGO,
assisting disabled people, said speaking to Tert.am.
`Government building 3, where the majority of ministries are located,
is almost convenient for the disabled people if not few stairs inside.
The chief entrance of the building has a slopeway, but still there are
stairs till the elevator,' he said.
`The new building of the Emergency Situations ministry is supposed to
be accommodated to the people with disabilities. The Government's
building does not have slopeways either,' he said.
While speaking about the Government's building, Armen Alaverdyan said
besides the absence of slopeways there is a tourniquet inside the
building, through which people on wheelchairs cannot pass.
`If the stairs can be overcome with the help of others, in case of
tourniquet it is impossible. Unfortunately it has become fashionable
to install them before entrances. It is being placed without thinking
of necessity of alternative entrance,' he said.
The NGO's chairman also stressed that there is no toilet in state
institutions intended for handicapped people. `May be they think that
disabled people cannot work in such institutions,' he said and
stressed that such people may be ministers or officials too.
Alaverdyan said they are periodically raising these issues in
different instances and in some cases reach results.
`Previously the municipality's building was very inconvenient, but now
it has been accommodated to disabled people. Technical means are being
undertaken in the ministries' buildings to solve the issue too. Though
slowly, but results are being registered,' he said.
