SEYRAN OHANYAN: ARMENIA IS INTERESTED IN THE JOINT TRAINING OF ARMENIAN ARMED FORCES AND US MARINE CORPS

Armenia thinks it is very much important to further develop the
military cooperation with the USA, Armenian Defence Minister Seyran
Ohanyan told journalists today after the meeting with US Secretary
of the Navy, Rey Mabus.
He said that 2011 and 2012 were especially fruitful in the matter
of development of bilateral relations in the sphere of defence,
and mutual high level visits are evidence of the serious potential
of the parties and the desire to further develop the cooperation.
Ohanyan separated two main direction of cooperation - the peace-making
operation in Afghanistan and Kosovo and the humanitarian clearing
minefields, as well as the reforms in the defence sphere. He also
said it is very much significant to cooperate with US Marine Corps
which is also subordinated to US secretary of Navy. In this context,
the minister added that for the last several years about 200 Armenian
servicemen were trained in Germany and Romania together with US Navy.
"We are going to further work in this direction", - Ohanyan said.
He also emphasized that they watched the possibility of cooperation
in the military and industrial sphere as well, in particular, in
upgrading of some types of special small arms.
