Dr. Sevada Chamras
GLENDALE-Glendale College Foundation nominated Dr. Sevada Chamras
for the 85th Anniversary Alumni of Distinction Award for Glendale
Community College. The award will be presented on October 20 during
a gala banquet marking the 85th anniversary.
Sevada was born and raised in Iran and migrated with his family to the
US in 1989. As a student at GCC, he fell in love with chemistry after
taking classes with such distinguished professors as Dr. Larry Byrd
who was his mentor and inspiration. Sevada continued as a transfer
student to complete his undergraduate studies and obtain a bachelor's
of science in Chemistry at UCLA and pursued his goal of becoming an
organic chemist at UC, Santa Barbara where he did an outstanding job
on theoretical study of the mechanisms of organic reactions.
Receiving a graduate degree in chemistry was his academic goal, and
becoming an excellent teacher was his vocational dream. He started his
teaching career first at Toll Middle School as a science teacher where
he inspired young scholars to become interested in science. While at
Toll, he taught part-time at GCC and because of the quality of his
work, was given an opportunity to substitute a full-time instructor
for a semester. Pretty soon, Dr. Sevada Chamras obtained a full-time
tenure-track position in Cerritos College where he worked for five
years.
However, GCC called him back, and Dr. Chamras willingly left his
tenured position at Cerritos to come back in 2007, where he has been
teaching organic chemistry Dr. Chamras has become a valuable asset
to the college and to the chemistry department.
In 2010, he spearheaded a project in receiving and transporting badly
needed laboratory supplies and instruments from Spectrum Chemicals
(Los Angeles-based Company) that resulted in donations of a retail
value of $120,000.
Dr. Sevada Chamras continues to be concerned about the difficult
budget situation for Glendale Community College and is supportive of
the fund-raising goals of the 85th Anniversary.
