SEISMOLOGIST: MAJOR PART OF BUILDINGS IN ARMENIA ARE IN A CRITICAL CONDITION, BUT NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE OF SHORTAGE OF FUNDS

The earthquakes in Iran have nothing in common with Armenia. The only
thing that unites them is a common seismically dangerous region,
deputy director of Armenian National Seismic Protection Service,
    Ashkhen Tovmasyan, told journalists today.

She said that predictions about possible earthquakes over the coming
two weeks are made in Armenia every year. At the same time, she added
that such investigations are effective in case of strong earthquakes,
as the weak ones - up to 6-7 magnitude are practically unpredictable.

She said that there are about 200 signs warning about earthquake, in
particular, water level grows much in water storage basins, chemical
composition of water changes, animals change their behavior, etc.

For his part, representative of Emergency Ministry, Gurgen Namalyan,
added after several earthquakes in Iran, seismic research was held in
Megri and Agarak where there were shocks at 5-6 magnitude. As a result,
there were small cracks and offset of foundations of several buildings.

He also added that major part of buildings in Armenia are in a critical
condition and need repairing, but cannot be repaired because the
    state has shortage of funds.
