The Azerbaijani authorities' attempts to justify the decision to
pardon Ramil Safarov is ungrounded, a deputy minister of Foreign
Affairs, Shavarsh Kocharyan, has told the Armenpress News Agency in an
interview.
The politician compared the move with an attempt to free and honor a
slaughterer sentenced for lifetime.
`This alarming act of the Azerbaijani authorities not only conflicts
with the humanistic purposes of the [Strasburg] Convention, but also
the spirit of the whole European system of human rights,' he said.
`Azerbaijan's attempts to cast shadow on the international legal
norms, adjusting them to its own xenophobic, racist `set of values'
are doomed to failure. They only equate the heinous murderer to the
Azerbaijani leadership which glorifies him.'
