CAUCASUS PEACE TALKS NEAR COLLAPSE AFTER AZERIS PARDON AXE MURDERER...

Hungary recently decided to extradite an Azeri man convicted of
chopping off an Armenian's head with an axe in a student dormitory
eight years ago. Shortly after arriving in Azerbaijan, the man was
pardoned and given a hero's welcome. The Hungarians say that the
Azeris had promised he would be serving the majority of his sentence.
In response, the Armenians are threatening to recognise
Nagorno-Karabakh, which would result in the collapse of the
Armenian-Azeri peace talks, and possibly the resumption of hostilities
in Karabakh.
I have posted this here because of the interesting parallels between
Karabakh and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Armenia fought and won a war
in 1994 that resulted in it occupying Karabakh, a largely Armenian
enclave within Azerbaijan. Since that time Karabakh has proclaimed its
independence (albeit essentially as an Armenian puppet state). The
international community, including the US and Israel, regard the
territory as Azeri and have declined to recognise Karabakh.
Accordingly, even Armenia itself does not formally recognise Karabakh.
Armenia is the oldest Christian country (since 301 AD), landlocked
between Turkic countries with overwhelmingly Muslim populations. About
15% of its population was killed in the Hammidian massacres in 1885,
and about two-thirds of the remainder were killed in the Armenian
genocide during World War I.
Since their defeat in the 1994 war, the Azeris have modernised their
military since with the aid of increasing oil revenues; however, the
Armenians have a powerful ally in Russia, which has an influential
Armenian minority and which provided vital assistance to the Armenians
during the last war.
