GETTING 'CURIOSITY' TO MARS: A PRESENTATION IN BOSTON
Armenian Weekly
September 10, 2012
WATERTOWN, Mass.-NASA's Mars Exploration Program will take a giant
leap and land in Watertown on Fri., Sept. 21, as two Armenians on
the "Curiosity" project describe how the Rover was built, launched,
and landed on Mars on Aug. 5.
The poster of the presentation "Curiosity" is a fascinating laboratory
on wheels that will spend months, if not years, exploring the red
planet in an attempt to learn more about our closest neighbor and,
by association, our universe.
Many Armenians are involved in this project, and Hamazkayin-Boston
is privileged to present two of these scientists to our community in
a lecture on the latest developments of the Mars Project.
Arbi V. Karapetian is currently the technical group supervisor for
the Integration and Test Engineering Group at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. He holds a B.S. in experimental physics
from UCLA and a M.S. in spacecraft system architecture and engineering
from USC. Karapetian has been active in the Armenian community from an
early age. He joined the boy scouts of the Glendale "Ararat" Chapter
and served on the Homenetmen's Western Region Executive Scout Council.
He also served as the president of the Western Region's Armenian
National Committee Professional Network (ANC-PN).
Richard Ohanian holds a B.S. in applied physics from Azad University,
and a B.S. in electrical and computer engineering and a M.S. in
electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology
(Caltech). He is a member of various associations, think-tanks,
and professional networks such as the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Policy Forum Armenia. He is
the founder of many associations including ArmEngine, a worldwide
organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship among Armenian
engineers and scientists.
The presentation will take place in the Lachinian Boardroom at the
Armenian Cultural and Educational Center (ACEC), 47 Nichols Ave. in
Watertown at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public;
free parking available.
Hamazkayin-Boston, a 501(3)C not-for-profit organization, is the local
chapter of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society.
