THE SCANDAL RELATED TO THE KILLER OFFICER AMNESTIED BY THE PRESIDENT
OF AZERBAIJAN RECEIVED CONTINUATION; The case of Ramil Safarov
amnestied by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev keeps stirring up
the international community.
The case of Ramil Safarov amnestied by President of Azerbaijan Ilham
Aliyev keeps stirring up the international community. Meetings of
solidarity with Armenia take place in Budapest from which he has
been extradited to his native country and in some cities of Europe,
US and South America. Political leaders of various levels condemned
the decision of Baku to amnesty the criminal sentenced to lifelong
imprisonment for murder of an Armenian officer. Azerbaijan said that
it was not going to explain its actions to anyone and announced a
threat to the life of Safarov behind which ASALA (Armenian Secret
Army for the Liberation of Armenia) was standing.
There is no smoke without a fire. A letter saying that ASALA issued
a death sentence to Safarov was sent to one of the Internet media.
The scandalous letter says, "Once again Western justice confirmed
its mercenary nature and complete absence of democracy. The West has
already proven many times that where gas, oil and strategic interests
begin democracy and justice disappear. The killer was released not by
Hungary and Azerbaijan but by Europe and the US. It was the US that
allowed this and approved liberation of the criminal for achievement
of its goals in the Caucasus. Unfortunately, everything is sold and
bought in the contemporary world including democracy and justice but
we cannot allow this. The Armenian Army for the Liberation of Armenia
(ASALA) issues a death sentence to Ramil Safarov. The sentence will
be executed in two years."
Before the "appearance" of ASALA in the Internet space a press
conference was held in Yerevan by veteran of the Nagorno-Karabakh
war Major General Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan. According to him, Safarov is
really threatened by death. Ter-Tadevosyan announced, "He has already
played his role and playing it to the end remains." According to the
general, provision of three interconnected factors is necessary for
beginning of combat operations, namely a strong army, a high level of
confidence in authorities of the country and readiness of the public.
Ter-Tadevosyan, "The role of Safarov is provision of two latter
elements. Having achieved extradition of Safarov, Aliyev provided the
second element, namely improved his image significantly. Acute reaction
of the Armenian party only increased this circumstance warming up
the myth about a strong democracy of Azerbaijan. It is necessary to
provide the third component, the readiness of the society. Safarov
will be needed exactly for this but being already dead." According
to him, some person with Armenian name who has allegedly acted
according to an order of Yerevan will be arrested by Azerbaijani
security agencies according to accusation of murder of the hero. Such
scenario will trigger a wish to take revenge in the Azerbaijani society
that considers Safarov a national hero and will increase readiness
for combat operations. Ter-Tadevosyan presumes that simultaneously
the Armenian party will be accused of terrorism and invasion into
Azerbaijan thus justifying restarting of combat operations in the
eyes of the international community with a hope to obtain its support.
Meanwhile, the case of amnestied and decorated Safarov keeps having
repercussions all over the world. Actions of protest against the
decision of the authorities of Hungary to extradite the killer to
his native country and the decision of Azerbaijan to amnesty him
continue in various countries and cities. Political performances
with condemning of the Hungarian government as a sign of solidarity
with Armenia took place in Budapest. The amnestying of Safarov was
covered by pages of international press in a way unpleasant for
Baku. Even Turkey, its nearest ally, did not stay aside. Analyst
of Radical newspaper Orhan Cengiz said in his article that "These
days Azerbaijan experiences collective craziness making a killer a
national hero and entire Caucasus starts boiling and tension between
Armenia and Azerbaijan starts growing because of this."
