STUDY OF OUR NATION'S SOUL

When boasting of our nation, we keep talking about what a noble and
generous nation we are.
We say it was our ancestors who opened their arms to Jews fleeing
from the Spanish Inquisition or to Jewish engineers or architects
who were fleeing Nazi brutality. And it is not a lie; there have
been periods when the Ottoman Empire welcomed refugees who had to
flee their country. But the opposite also occurred. The Ottoman
Empire, boasting of its open its arms to refugees, deported 1.5
million Armenians in 1915 even though it knew they were going to
die, and it deported non-Muslims and non-Turks during the riots of
Sept. 6-7, 1955, after seizing all their properties. Every country
has its generous periods as well as its dark periods. The question
is how we are today. We again keep saying how we welcomed Iraqi Kurds
fleeing Saddam Hussein's brutality and Syrian refugees fleeing Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad's atrocities. But what about extrajudicial
killings perpetrated by the deep state on non-Muslims? What about
a recently released study revealing that 61 percent of Turks do not
want refugees in their country?
