Turkey and Azerbaijan already brought together by the Trans-Anatolian
gas pipeline (TANAP) that will carry Azeri gas to Turkey and onto
Europe, on 11 September further strengthened their co-operation by
signing eight agreements in the fields of energy, transportation,
    diplomacy, economy and culture.

The ceremonial signing followed a meeting of Azerbaijan-Turkey
    High-Level Strategic Co-operation Council. Azerbaijan's President
Ilham Aliyev and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed
a protocol of the second meeting of Azerbaijan-Turkey High-Level
    Strategic Co-operation Council.

Aliyev noted they discussed world political developments and vowed
to support each other within international organisations.

"Azerbaijan-Turkey relations are very important for not only
development of bilateral ties because they play a stabilising role
for ensuring peace, security in the region," he said. Aliyev noted
discussions were also concerned with Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Of the major powers in Azerbaijan's region, Turkey has the strongest
ties to Baku. Aliyev also noted that the co-operation in the energy
sphere is of traditional character. "Co-operation in the economical
sphere is the priority as always. Following our Izmir meeting,
important events occurred. We signed the TANAP project. During the
next five years, we will achieve the implementation of the TANAP
project. Azerbaijan will be the important gas supplier for Turkey. At
the same time Azerbaijan's gas will be transported to Europe via
    Turkey," Aliyev said.

Erdogan also touched upon the TANAP project signed in Turkey. "From
this point, the process has started. Inshallah, mechanisms will be
put in place shortly," he added.

The Azeri President said he also discussed with Erdogan issues related
military-technical co-operation. The co-operation in this sphere is
based on the friendship and fraternal principles. I can also say that
great progress is being observed over the last period," Aliyev added.

Overall, Erdogan said that they discussed important issues in the
political, cultural, and other fields. He expressed hope that trade
turnover between the countries would reach $5bn by 2015. (KG)
