YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS: The head of Azerbaijani EURONEST
delegation sent letters to the deputies of European Council in which
he was urging to vote against Savarov's resolution. As Armenpress was
informed from the head of Armenian EURONEST delegation Artak Zakaryan
he has sent corresponding letters to all 752 members of the European
Parliament. Below we present the text of the letter.
"I am writing to you as the head of the Armenian EURONEST delegation on
case of Ramil Safarov. You are very busy so I will focus on providing
you with some information which will set the facts right: The pardoning
and public glorification of Ramil Safarov, a very brutal murderer who
admitted to xenophobic motives and was convicted by a court of an EU
member state (Hungary), has shown a problem for all European goals
in the Eastern Partnership and the European Neighborhood Program:
there is state promoted anti-Armenian xenophobia in Azerbaijan which
increases tensions around the Karabakh conflict.
To say that the EP would be responsible for increasing tensions with
a resolution is a turn-around of facts and simply a scare tactic.
Talking about Armenia's "bellicose statements" is the same turn-around,
as Armenia has not made a single statement and indeed has no
interest or incentive for war. However, the list of war threatening
statements by President Aliyev is very long and documented on the
internet. The resolution text you drafted is in line with the long
list of international condemnations of this Human Rights case, ranging
from Amnesty International, the Council of Europe, the UN Secretary
General to the Presidents of the EP, the AFET and the South Caucasus
Delegation. It is a sign that the EP defends European values and this
is what Armenia and other countries in the ENP area seek in Europe. To
claim that Azerbaijan is "committed to democracy, human right and
the rule of law" will not convince anyone, after the Eurovision and
the Safarov case made the real situation public. Dear colleagues,
I hope you will not fall into the trap of being split internally or
mislead by the understandably strong activities of Azerbaijan right
now. Our neighbor will not develop in a better way, if now spared, on
the contrary. If Europe does not defend European values in this case,
it would send out a terrible signal to Azerbaijan and similar states."
