CSTO MILITARY DRILLS PROVE ARMENIA BEING IMPORTANT COUNTRY FOR RUSSIA, ANALYST SAYS

The CSTO military drills were important not only for Armenia but
Russia as well, Richard Giragosian, director of Regional Studies
Center, told the reporters on Tuesday.
He said for Armenia they were significant from two points of view.
"First of all they were important for being a message to Azerbaijan
about Armenia being the strongest military state in the region. It
was also a reminder for Azerbaijani officials that in case they start
war they will lose," he said.
The second reason, is that the drills showed Armenia being an important
country for Russia. "It shows that Armenia is Russia's sole reliable
ally. The issue is that Russia should treat Armenia as equal," he said.
Referring to Georgia's concern over the military drills, Giragosian
said, their concern is justified. "The fact is that Russian military
divisions located in Gyumri as well as Abkhazia and South Ossetia
armed forces participated in the military exercises. It shows that
Russia intimidates Georgia," Giragosian said, adding that in this
respect the military drills stem from Russia's interests as well.
At the same time the analyst said Armenia should be able to maintain
the balancing position in relations with both Georgia and Russia and
should realize that Georgia is as important ally for the country as
Russia is.
