Russian, Armenian defense ministers to discuss military cooperation
prospects (adds details)
MOSCOW September 18
Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov will discuss prospects for
military cooperation with his Armenian colleague Seiran Oganyan, the
Russian Defense Ministry reported.
"On September 18-19, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov will make an
official visit to the Republic of Armenia. According to the program of
the visit, he will hold talks with his colleague - Armenian Defense
Minister Seiran Oganyan," the report said.
The ministers will consider the current condition of the armed forces
of both countries and further prospects for bilateral military and
military and technological cooperation between them.
On September 19, Anatoly Serdyukov will participate in the final stage
of Interaction 2012, a joint exercise involving the collective rapid
response forces /KSOR/ of the Collective Security Treaty
Organization," the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The official ceremony to open the joint exercise took place at the
Bagramyan range on September 15. In the course of the drill, KSOR
units will train the use of forces and facilities of the collective
security system in the Caucasus region.
Taking part in Interaction 2012 are military formations and command
bodies of the armed forces of four CSTO states: Russia, Armenia,
Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Kyrgyzstan is not taking part in the exercise, and Tajikistan is
represented by four military observers.
"In all, the KSOR CSTO group at the exercise in Armenia, including
specialized units of the Interior Ministry and the Emergency
Situations Ministry, number over 2,500," a Defense Ministry official
said.
He noted that representatives of the International Committee of the
Red Cross are taking part in the KSOR CSTO drill for the first time.
They will interact with the KSOR command in a special operation.
"Under the scenario, the drill aims to train humanitarian assistance
in conflict-prone areas," the military official said.
