Armenia true to its targets 21 years after gaining independence - president
YEREVAN. Sept 21
Armenia has made serious achievements since it gained independence 21
years ago, President Serzh Sagsyan said.
"The Republic of Armenia has already turned 21 years old. We have been
through all possible crises and tests over these years. We have stood
all of them with dignity and have not lost our human and political
face. We have not lost our targets and have not betrayed our path and
ideas. We have made serious achievements despite losses and
miscalculations," the president said in an Independence Day message on
Friday.
Irreversible processes have taken place in the state, society, as well
as the Armenian people's way of thinking and psychology, he said.
"We have been building a qualitatively new country year by year, day
by day. History saw a multitude of Armenian states, but each of them
was unique and had its own path of development," Sargsyan said.
The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Armenia's Supreme
Council on August 23, 1990, renaming the Armenian Soviet Socialist
Republic as the Republic of Armenia. Nearly 95% of Armenian citizens
voted in favor of quitting the Soviet Union in a referendum held on
September 21, 1991. The Supreme Council proclaimed Armenia's
independence from the USSR two days later.
