YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 24, ARMENPRESS: German Armenian Central Council
issued a letter to the burgomeister of Mannheim city Peter Kurtz
demanding to clarify the truthfulness of the information that one
part of the city would be officially renamed a "Turkish District".
As Armenpress was informed from the Chairman of German Armenian Central
Council Azat Ordukhian it was noted in the letter to the Major that
not only Armenians but also other ethnic religious groups such as
Kurds, Yezidis, Greeks, Assyrians were deeply concerned with the
possible change.
"If there is such a project to be carried out you must take into
consideration the joint protest of our organizations. It would be
better to discuss our alternative suggestion before making a decision.
We just can not imagine how such city like Mannheim can afford
such behavior against its foreign inhabitants" it is noted in the
declaration.
Turks colonising the German city of Mannheim have decided to rename
a part of the city where they have come to predominate. Turkish
associations and others recently met in the town hall to discuss the
new name.
Peter Kurz, the burgomeister, proposed the name "Little Istanbul".
Other suggestions included "Beyoglu" and "Kucuk Istanbul". The plan
is to narrow the list of proposed names down to three then put the
matter to the vote in a referendum.
