Donors Contribute $147,000 for Syrian Armenian Relief Fund

Glendale, CA ` At the first fund-raiser of the Syrian Armenian Relief
Fund (SARF) last Thursday, Sept. 19, the total collectedto aid
Armenians in war-torn Syria duringthe past several weeks reached
$147,000. The fundraising event, generously hosted by Phoenicia
Restaurant in Glendale, was attended by over 100 people, including
representatives from the 10 organizations that make up the SARF
    coalition.
ARS-WUSA is a leading member of SARF. Lena Bozoyan, chairperson, and
Liza Santikian, treasurer, attended the event on behalf of the
ARS-WUSA Regional Executive. Sona Madarian, who represents the
ARS-WUSA on theSARF Executive Committee, emceed the event. The other
organizations in SARF are the Armenian Catholic Eparchy, Armenian
Evangelical Union, Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, Western
Prelacy, Armenian Democratic Liberal Party, Armenian Revolutionary
Federation, Social Democrat Hunchakian Party, Armenian General
Benevolent Union, and Armenian Missionary Association.
Clergy, representing the Apostolic, Catholic and Evangelical
denominations blessed the evening's dinner, and throughout the program
Arch. Hovnan Derderian, Rev. Fr. Krikor Chahinian and Rev. Joseph
Matossian urged those present to do their part to help the
Syrian-Armenians during this time of great need.
Arch. Moushegh Mardirossian, who was instrumental in helping bring
the SARF coalition together, quoted His Holiness Aram I that Armenians
need to be committed to preserving and safeguarding our communities in
Syria. The Prelate recalled that the initial response to the crisis in
Syria was to help the schools, and he praised the ARS for
    accomplishing that objective early on.
Zaven Khanjian, SARF Executive Committee Chairman, noted that the
motto, `Poloren Polorin' (from everyone to everyone) appropriately
describes how the various organizations have come together to help the
Syrian-Armenian community, which has provided invaluable and
immeasurable contributions to the Diaspora in the decades since the
Armenian Genocide. Khanjian ended his remarks with an appeal: `Did you
    contribute to the Syrian-Armenians?'
