It is hard for the Armenian opposition to compete with the ruling
Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) during the elections, as the RPA
has more administrative and financial resources, Anahit Bakhshyan,
ex-MP from the Heritage Party, said at a press conference in Yerevan
on Monday.
She said that the RPA uses all the legal and illegal resources
and wins at the elections due to these resources. "It is hard to
fight against the party, which has seized everything; consequently,
every party weighs its chances for victory before nominating its
candidates", she said. In the meantime, Bakhshyan pointed out that
the local elections in Armenia passed peacefully and no fraud was
registered. The people voted for the candidates who may be helpful
in the future, for instance, they voted for the owners of shops to
borrow some goods from them.
For her part, Karine Achemyan, MP from the RPA, said that despite the
big competition, the local elections passed peacefully, fairly and
without any conflicts. She assured that the RPA was working to hold
transparent and fair elections. "It has become clear once again that
the RPA is a strong party, which nominates worthy candidates and the
people support them", she said.
To note, according to the preliminary data, the turnout at the Sept 23
local elections in five regions of Armenia was 53.31% (342,138 people).
A total of 521 candidates were running in 5 regions of Armenia, of
them 176 were non-partisan, 241 members of the RPA, 69 members of the
Prosperous Armenia Party, 21 members of ARF Dashnaktsutiun, 6 members
of Orinats Yerkir Party, 2 members of the Communist Party and 2 members
of the Democracy and Labor Party. According to the preliminary data,
mostly the RPA representatives obtained the majority of votes.
