Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Å tefan
Fule, and Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan, signed two
new financing agreements between the European Union and Armenia in
Yerevan on Thursday.
Totaling â~B¬43 million, the two agreements focus on institution
building and will support the negotiations and implementation
of the future EU-Armenia bilateral agreements: the Association
Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area and Visa
Facilitation/Readmission Agreement.
"I believe we are preparing the ground for an Armenia which is a state
with more citizen-friendly institutions, an attractive investment
destination and better conditions for those businesses which want to
take advantage of new market opportunities," Commissioner Fule said
after signing the documents.
Å tefan Fule conveyed the EU's positive assessment of the reforms
Armenia has implemented on the path of European integration. "Armenia
demonstrates political will, and the European Union appreciates this,"
he said.
Mr. Fule expressed his support to Armenia's position on and indignation
at the transfer of Ramil Safarov from Hungary to Azerbaijan, where
his was pardoned a promoted
Asked how Armenia can trust the European Union, considering
the fact that EU member Hungary secretly extradited Azerbaijani
murderer Safarov, Commissioner Fule said: "I fully respect the
position of Armenians on the issue and your right to demonstrate your
indignation. Let me express my concern and regret over the damage Ramil
Safarov's release has caused to the process of peaceful settlement
of the Karabakh conflict." He called on the sides to show restraint
and continue seeking peace.
