Armenia's 'If Only Every One' joins foreign Oscar race
War drama examines Azerbaijan conflict
By Nick Holdsworth
MOSCOW -- Armenia's candidate for best foreign language Oscar is
Natalia Belyauskene's ''If Only Everyone,'' a film about how in war
there are no winners.
Dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Caucasian country's
independence and its army, the film is set during the Artsakh war --
the bitter conflict between Armenia and neighboring Azerbaijan over
secession region Nagorno-Karabakh.
Made with the support of Armenia's president, Serzh Sargsyan, the
film's producer, Michael Poghosyan, says he hopes it can serve as a
means of reconciliation.
''It is easy to get to fury,'' he told news agency Armenpress. ''But
we have tried to look at everything objectively as we fought for what
belonged to us.''
He said he hoped the film would also be seen in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital.
Oscar nominations close Jan. 10, ahead of the Academy Awards on Feb. 24.
