LEVON ARONIAN STARTED WORLD CHAMPION CANDIDATES' TOURNAMENT WELL - RUSSIAN GM
April 2
By Vera Martirosyan
The World Champion Candidates' Tournament, which wrapped up in London,
will be remembered for long. Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian-who plays
first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champion Armenian
national team and who is currently ranked second in the World Chess
Federation (FIDE) Ratings-began the tournament marvelously. Russian
national chess team coach, GM Vladimir Potkin-who had worked with
Aronian for several years-told this to NEWS.am Sport.
"This was one of the most spectacular and interesting tournaments.
They all were fighting until the last moment. Levon began the
tournament marvelously, but only he can explain what happened with
him after his game against [GM Boris] Gelfand [of Israel]; there
could be a variety of factors. The tension was so strong in the end
that many were making mistakes.
"I wish Levon Aronian success, so that he may perform in the best
way in the next stage. Despite everything, he is one of the world's
strongest chess players. With his beautiful game, Levon will make the
Armenian fans happy still for a long time," Potkin said in particular.
