Armenian Carnival And Clownery
The ongoing post-electoral process in Armenia reminds a carnival on
the one hand, and clownery, on the other hand. The carnival is the
society, the clownery is the so-called political parties. On the one
side there are fireworks, creative, bright ideas and faces, on the
other side are cretins with complexes, party elites and `theorists'
who are waiting impatiently for the end of the carnival in order to
continue their activities which are growing meaningless.
The `ritualistic' meaning of the carnival is that people put on
costumes and masks and thus become equal to one other. Carnivals are
held on the eve of the Lent, a word that means farewell to meat. The
protagonist of the carnival is the veracious `clown' who leads it to
the central square where it ends.
The Armenian carnival continues but without masks. There is no need to
put on masks because everyone knows each other, there are no secrets,
and it is not possible to hide the truth. Deep changes are happening
in Armenia. The public gradually gets rid of stereotypes and ideas,
which means that there is no need to wear masks to feel equal.
Against this background the behavior of the Armenian `elite',
government, `alternative' and opposition `political' groups is
clownery. These groups turned out inadequate to the new realities and
unable to propose a fundamental and bright idea to the society.
Instead, they tend to go back trying to mock and eliminate everything
new and bright which objectively threatens their existence. These
attempts cause but laughter in the society.
Usually, the carnival ends in a huge march at the end of which the
effigy is burnt on the square. In case of Armenia, the effigy
represents the exhausted political-business-party system with its
governmental and oppositional segments and apologists.
