Police intimidate people in Armenia's villages - statement

    10:12 - 08.04.13

Former presidential candidate Raffi Hovhannisian's headquarters has
issued a statement expressing concerns over police intimidation
against the population in villages ahead of the opposition's April 9
    rally in Yerevan's Liberty Square.

The headquarters says it has received an emergency call saying that
the police walk from house to house in different villages of Armenia
to prevent people from attending the event which coincides with the
    presidential inauguration day.

According to the statement, leaflets posted on advertisement stands to
inform people of the sanctioned public gathering were torn apart
    shortly after they appeared there.

The young activists of Hovhannisian's Heritage party, who managed to
video-record the number-plates of the car following them, saw it stop
near the police station of Yerevan's Arabkir administrative district
minutes later and its two passengers (who had torn the leaflets) enter
    the building.

They have reported the Arabkir police on the incident.

Hovhannisian's headquarters call for finding if the individuals
concerned are really policemen and if that's the case - enforcing
    urgent liability measures against them.

`We find that it is the duty of the police to protect the letter of
the law instead of carrying out the political persecutions of the
ruling party and its leader,' says the statement.
