'WHO ELECTED SERZH SARGSYAN?' OPPOSITION REP ASKS
21:02 ~U 09.04.13
Nikol Pashinyan, an MP from the opposition bloc Armenian National
Congress (ANC), informed Azatutyun Radio that the police are preventing
demonstrators from going up the Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims.
Mr Pashinyan participated in the rally with his wife and children.
"If Baghramyan Avenue does not belong to people, the question is:
who elected Serzh Sargsyan?"
"The political elite must leave their posts. Serzh Sargsyan must
realize that Armenia's people do not accept him as the country's
president," he said.
Chief of the Yerevan Police Department Nerses Nazaryan told
journalists that the demonstrators could approach the Memorial to
Armenian Genocide victims (Tsisternakaberd) via Saryan Str and Victory
Bridge. In response to a demonstrator's remark, Mr Nazaryan said,
"You are bloodthirsty." However, the man objected, saying the people
are only seeking democracy.
Raffi Hovannisian was later reported to be marching toward
Tsitsernakaberd, accompanied by his supporters.
