Ex-President: Opposition has a real chance to inflict a crushing
defeat on authorities during elections to Yerevan Elders' Council

Today the opposition has a real chance to inflict a crushing defeat on
the authorities during the May 5 elections to the Yerevan Elders'
Council and put an end to the ruling regime. It is the victory at the
elections in Yerevan that will mark the beginning of the path to the
Armenian presidential seat, the first President of Armenia, said at
today's Congress of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) Party.
"To achieve this goal, the opposition should immediately join efforts.
This will allow controlling the elections to the Elders' Council. The
opposition's cooperation in controlling the electoral process is very
important. The totalitarian regime will do everything possible to
avoid a vacuum in its power, because a defeat, even at the level of a
village, is of much significance to the regime", he said.
At the same time, when commenting on the calls to join Raffi
Hovannisian's Barevolution Movement, Ter- Petrosyan said that the ANC
is a political force capable of participating in political processes
only, whereas over the post-electoral period people witnessed
everything but political processes. "We announced on the first day
after the election that Raffi Hovannisian won the election", he said.
"Certainly, it is unacceptable to criticize the person on the
barricades, however, we are asked why we don't join Raffi Hovannisian.
We'd like to ask - what for? To go and pray together with Vova
Gasparyan? It was not my dream even when I was a little boy", he said.
He thinks that Serzh Sargsyan will never forgive Raffi Hovannisian
even for the 37% of official votes, whereas, in reality, it was Raffi
Hovannisian who was elected president. For this reason, during the
upcoming elections to the Elders' Council, Sargsyan will do his best
to make Hovannisian obtain the smallest number of Yerevan's
electorate.
The ANC Party congress is being held at the Sports and Concert Complex
named after K. Demirchyan. Head of the ANC Parliamentary Faction
Levon Zurabyan says 1100 delegates have been invited to the Congress
alongside with numerous guests. The congress agenda comprises such
issues as approval of the ANC's Regulations, program, election of the
chairman and the Board, as well as the Supervisory Committee.
Representatives of the People's Party of Armenia headed by Stepan
Demirchyan, Hnchakian Social Democratic Party led by Lyudmila
Sargsyan, ARFD led by Armen Rustamyan and Prosperous Armenia Party led
by Stepan Margaryan have attended the event.
