IN TERMS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ARMENIA SEVEN TIMES INFERIOR TO DEVELOPED NATIONS: AGHANBEGYAN
YEREVAN, April 18. / ARKA /. In terms of economic development
Armenia is more than seven times inferior to developed countries,
Abel Aghanbegyan, head of the department of economic theory and policy
at the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration,
said today in Yerevan at Yegor Gaidar Readings.
Yegor Gaidar was Russia's acting prime minister from 15 June 1992 to 14
December 1992. He is best known as the architect of the controversial
shock therapy reforms administered in Russia after the disintegration
of the Soviet Union.
"Armenia's economic development level, that is per capita GDP (in
terms of purchasing power parity) is $5,500, in Russia the figure is
more than $20,000 while in G-7 countries it is $40,000, " he said.
Aghanbegyan said in Armenia there are several key problems which
need to be solved, and the "main problem is economic and social
backwardness.' Other pressing problems are disproportional development
of Yerevan and the regions of the country.
"According to official figures, about one third of Armenia's population
lives in Yerevan, but more than 80% of retail sales of goods and
housing are here," he said.
The Gaidar Readings, opened today will end on April 19 at the
Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University. They feature lectures,
discussions, round tables and seminars. The Gaidar Readings is a
project of Yegor Gaidar Foundation. The organization of readings in
Armenia was assisted by the Gaidar Economic Policy Institute, the
Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University and the Academy of National
Economy and Public Administration under the President of the Russian
