ARMENIA IS A WORLD LEADER BY SIZE OF HIDDEN UNEMPLOYMENT: ABEL AGHANBEGYAN SAYS
YEREVAN, April 18. /ARKA/. Armenia is a world leader by size of hidden
unemployment, according to Abel Aghanbegyan, head of the department
of economic theory and policy at the Russian Academy of National
Economy and Public Administration, who was a key speaker today at
Yegor Gaidar Readings at Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University.
Yegor Gaidar was Russia~Rs acting prime minister from 15 June
1992 to 14 December 1992. He is best known as the architect of the
controversial shock therapy reforms administered in Russia after the
disintegration of the Soviet Union.
"The unemployment rate in Armenia is extremely huge. Officially there
are 265,000 jobless people, but in fact of 2.3 million working age
citizens only 1.1 million are employed , the rest are not considered
unemployed. Such figures can not be found in any other country,"
he said.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the number
of officially registered unemployed in February 2013 stood at 61,300,
which was 8.6% lower than in February 2012. In February 2013 their
number fell by 1.1% from the previous month.-0-
