TWO VARDANS IN U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT
The annual report of the U.S. Department of State mentions Vardan
Oskanian and Vardan Ayvazyan. The report states " the National Security
Service opened an investigation of the former head of the Civilitas
Foundation and former foreign minister Vardan Oskanian on suspicion
of money laundering, a day after Oskanian's party, Prosperous Armenia,
announced its decision not to join the ruling coalition".
The report also states, "On September 6, a foreign court fined
Vardan Ayvazyan, a member of the National Assembly and chair of its
Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, $37.5 million for demanding a
bribe from the Global Gold Mining Company when he was minister of the
environment. At year's end Ayvazyan remained in his National Assembly
posts, and no investigation was launched into the reported corruption."
The two Vardans are symbols of the Armenian politics. Vardan Oskanian
speaks about the necessity to end the monopoly of the government,
makes efforts to form civil structures, implements urban development
projects, has set up an alternative web TV and tries its best to
give political form to amorphous PAP. Together with all its mistakes
and shortcomings which are not few he is trying to lobby a different
Armenia.
Vardan Aivazyan is one of the vivid representatives of the ruling
system with his cynicism, lack of political honesty, ability to
justify everything, his sole purpose is to make money, and he thinks
that the citizens can live on 200 dollars a month.
Vardan Ayvazyan is now on the horse. In Armenia no investigation was
launched into this big corruption scheme. Although the prosecutor
general was afraid that revelation of this scheme would reveal all
the members of the club, and he would be the first victim. Vardan
Ayvazyan is today's Armenia.
Vardan Oskanian has to fight not only against the ruling system
but also his own party which is part of the ruling system and is
reluctant to get out of it. He tries to set up "a different party"
since building a "different Armenia" is not successful.
And as long as Vardan Ayvazyan is on the back of the horse, is head
of a standing parliamentary committee, adopts economic laws, while
Vardan Oskanian is charged with money laundering only because he has
separated himself from the monolith of the government, there will
not be a "different Armenia".
