Members of Committee of Wise, a Turkey-based group dealing with the
Kurdish issue, visited Sunday the only Armenian village in the country,
Vakil, Hurriyet reported.
After a candle-lighting ceremony in the village's Armenian church,
actress Lale Mansur delivered a welcoming speech in Armenian,
expressing their love for the village's population.
The local governor reminded the guests that Valfir remains the only
Armenian village on Turkey's territory. "Our church is 100 years old.
We have been living here for 135 years. Unfortunately, it is the only
Armenian village in Turkey," he said.
To Inanri's question about the village's school, the governor said
they have to send children to Istanbul for receiving education as
the village does not operate a school.
Inanri promised that the country's new constitution will address the
needs of all segments of the society, including the Armenians.
"Though the continuing peace process has a regional character, it will
apply to you all. The new constitution will concern all of you. Live
here in peace. Be happy and strong," he told the village's residents.
