The Special Investigative Service of the Armenian Police has finished
the interrogation of Armen Martirosyan, the opposition Heritage
party's deputy head, who now runs for the Yerevan mayor.

Speaking to reporters after the questioning, which lasted almost three
hours, the politician described the April 9 police clashes with the
police as a brutal act against himself and the crowd of supporters
who were holding a peaceful rally as a sign of protest against Serzh
Sargsyan's inauguration for a second term.

"The interrogation was quite normal, and there is no problem at all.

It remains to be seen what will come next," he said.

Martirosyan explained that the Service has launched two criminal
cases, one relating to a morning incident that saw the police resort
to excessive measures against the peaceful protesters, and the second
concerning the evening incident in which the Heritage deputy leader
had his nose broken during clashes with the police.

"The police representatives simply demonstrated a brutal instinct,
by using violence against me. Fortunately, I have a healthier body
and resisted the violence much more easily, without suffering big
injuries. But such acts may affect other citizens in future, so the
police must get rid of such officers," he said.

Asked whether the police have any right to summon Martirosyan for
questioning given that he is a top candidate on the Barev Yerevan
bloc's ballot, the politician said he doesn't see any problem about
    that.

"The issue is not whether or not they have a right. To the best
of my knowledge, no consent is required from the Central election
Commission," he said. "When they called me, I said I was ready to
take part in any investigative operation because I definitely acted
within the Constitution and the laws, and the international treaties
    ratified by Armenia."

Martirosyan accused the police of failing to protect the crowd and
disrupting instead of assisting in the peaceful procession.
