FRESNO COUNTY OFFERS SYMBOLIC SUPPORT FOR ARMENIANS

In a departure from normal business, the Fresno County Board of
Supervisors on Tuesday offered symbolic support for Armenians living
in a former Soviet region where the leadership is in dispute.

Supervisors passed a resolution recognizing independence of the largely
Armenian territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is inside the sovereign
nation of Azerbaijan. The two states have wrestled over control of
    the province.

A representative of the Republic of Armenia, which supports the
Nagorno-Karabakh's independence, was at Tuesday's board meeting.

"Every step toward the recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
is a step toward peace and friendly relations in the South Caucasus,"
said Grigor Hovhannissian, consul general for Armenia, in a prepared
    statement.

Fresno County's resolution asks the state Legislature, U.S. Congress
and president to also support Nagorno-Karabakh's independence.

The resolution, authored by Supervisor Andreas Borgeas, was timed
with commemoration of the 98th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

Fresno County is home to many Armenian immigrants and their families.
