ST. GREGORY ARMENIAN CHURCH HONORS SURVIVORS, THOSE KILLED IN GENOCIDE

Granite City, IL (KSDK) - Sunday was a day of remembrance and prayer
for Armenians around the world.
Armenia is a Christian nation in Eastern Europe surrounded by Muslim
states. In 1915 more than a million Armenians were murdered at the
hands of the Ottoman Empire.
Armenians from the St. Louis area gathered Sunday at St. Gregory
Armenian Church in Granite City where a special ceremony was held to
honor survivors and those who were killed in the genocide.
The U.S. and Turkish Governments don't recognize the Armenian
Genocide. That's something journalist and Armenian National Committee
member Michelle Hagopian is working to change.
"I think it's important for us to realize that there's nothing wrong
with diversity. There's nothing wrong with honoring our past and trying
to focus on what we can do better in the future," said Hagopian. "But
it's something that we need to work on to build our relationship with
our neighbors in Armenia and the United States to build more allies."
Missouri, Illinois and 40 other states have recognized the Armenian
Genocide.
