Iran is concerned over Armenia's possible signing the Association
Agreement with the EU. Moreover, by negotiating with Azerbaijan
on opening of the Horadiz-Aslanduz checkpoint, Tehran is sending a
clear message to Armenia and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs that it
is not going to give up its interests in the South Caucasus, Armenian
political expert Sergey Shakaryants said at a press conference.
"Today Iran has its own program of the Karabakh conflict settlement,
however, Tehran thinks that the time for its implementation has
not yet come", said Shakaryants. He thinks that the opening of the
checkpoint in the conflict zone, i.e. in Horadiz (liberated territory
around the NKR - editor's note) is senseless, but Iran is negotiating
to open it in order to show "who wears the pants".
"Iran perfectly realizes that by signing the Association Agreement
with the EU, Armenia becomes dependent on Brussels, which introduced
sanctions against Iran and sooner or later this will affect the
Armenian-Iranian relations", he said. He also pointed out that during
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's forthcoming visit to Iran on
the occasion of President Hassan Rouhani's swearing-in ceremony,
an informal meeting may take place and the Iranian side will call on
the Armenian President to think over his own steps.
Earlier Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsun Pak Ayin said that
Azerbaijan and Iran came to an agreement to open the Horadiz-Aslanduz
checkpoint. The relevant decision has already been made.
