Azerbaijan tries to hush up scandal with Lithuanian diplomats'
statements in favor of Armenian occupation of Karabakh
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. The Lithuanian media have hyped in full
posted-on-youtube recording of telephone conversations of diplomats of
their country, relating to the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno Karabakh
conflict, as well as other scrupulous topics.
They have already managed to achieve voluntary retirement of
Lithuanian ambassador Arturas Zhurauskas to Baku and Ryanatas Yushka
to Budapest. Yesterday agency BNS (Baltic News Service) got to the
Azerbaijani ambassador to Lithuania Hasan Mammadzadeh with a request
to comment talks of diplomats which became property of public.
"I want to stress that I believe the above-mentioned incident is a new
provocative action against Azerbaijan and Lithuania," the Azerbaijani
ambassador stated in a comment for BNS, simultaneously expressing
doubts about the authenticity of statements of Lithuanian ambassadors.
"I am convinced that my current colleague, Ambassador of Lithuania in
Hungary knows that today our countries' ties are based on the
relations of the fundamental norms and principles of international law
to which there are no alternatives," Mammadzadeh said.
In his view, such a conversation is not possible between the two
diplomats of high level, and said that he cannot believe that the
Lithuanian ambassador to Hungary could express a different opinion
about the "occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the name of the
territory of Azerbaijan" than the official position of Lithuania.
"We are concerned with evaluation of the conflict based on religious
views, as in the Middle Ages," Mammadzadeh claimed.
On 8 July there were posted on youtube 4 clips with the phone records
of Deputy Director of the Eastern Partnership Department of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Zenonas Kumyataytis,
ambassadors Yushka and Zhurauskas, Foreign Ministry's official
Gediminas Kasputis. 2 clips relate to Karabakh conflict, and the
Lithuanian media give their partial translation into Russian.
"I'm one of those who support the Armenians. Because they are
Christians, they are just as affected by the maps drawn up by Stalin
(...), as well as we are. And I support them. Very passive, but ...,"
allegedly said Jushka.
"Humanly or from religious point of view it seems that Armenia is
closer, but they, you know, "poor", are sold out, so you know it's
like to see on which side. For me, so now the main thing is that they
both were in the context of the on board summit,' Kumyataytis stated.
It should be noted that the Lithuanian media do not bring the
statements of Zhurauskas on Karabakh.
