ASSAD'S DISMISSAL NOT ON THE AGENDA NOW - EXPERT
August 09, 2013 | 13:33
YEREVAN. - Armenian experts note clear change in West's rhetoric on
Syria. Expert on oriental studies Suren Manukyan believes that Bashar
Assad's dismissal is not on the agenda as it used to be in the past.
None of the parties challenges participation of the Assad's
representative in the planned Geneva conference.
"Both Russia and the West admit that Assad must participate in the
conference. The key issue the sides failed to agree on is what forces,
except for Assad, must be present," Manukyan told reporters on Friday.
This indicated that at least at the current stage of the conflict
the question on Syrian president's dismissal has been removed from
the agenda.
As regards Washington's position, the expert considers that U.S. goal
most likely is to weaken Syria, rather than destroy it. Continuation
of protracted war and uncertainty in the Middle East is the main goal
of the United States.
