A Turkish Airlines pilot and his colleague were abducted in Lebanon
Aug. 9 by armed men who forced them from a bus driving them from
Beirut airport, The Hurriyet Daily News reports.
The kidnapping is believed to be linked to the abduction of nine
Lebanese pilgrims in Syria in May 2012, whose families have urged
Turkey to use its influence to secure their release.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called Lebanese Prime Minister
Najip Mikati and Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri. Mikati and Berri
have expressed their sadness and vowed to make the necessary efforts
to free the pilots.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Levent Gumrukcu said the Lebanese
authorities were alarmed over the incident and an investigation was
being carried out. He added that the rest of the crew was now in a
hotel and would arrive Turkey in the afternoon.
"A kidnapping operation took place at 3:00 a.m. targeting a bus
carrying several members of a Turkish Airlines crew going from the
airport to the hotel," Lebanon's Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said.
"Gunmen kidnapped two passengers from the bus, the pilot and
co-pilot." The name of the pilot is Murat Akpınar and the co-pilot
is Murat Agca, according to Dogan News Agency.
