ARMENIAN CABINET APPROVES AMENDMENTS TO GENDER LAW
13:00 29.08.13
The executive approved Thursday the proposed amendments to the gender
equality law, excluding the controversial provision that defined
gender as an acquired social behavior.
Introducing the bill, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Artem
Asatryan said the demand for invalidating the provision is aimed to
mitigate the existing concerns in the society.
He proposed instead replacing the phrase gender relations with equal
rights and equal opportunities between men and women.
"The international document that served as a basis for adopting
this law is the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination against Men and Women. The state has undertaken
commitments to ensure equality of rights between men and women,"
he said.
Asatryan added that the earlier amendments proposed by Naira Zohrabyan,
the secretary of the Prosperous Armenia faction in parliament, was
rejected as it did not fully cover the problem.
The cabinet will send the bill to the National Assembly for approval.
