`India attaches importance to its friendship with Armenia', says Lok
Sabha Speaker
: New Delhi
Office of The Speaker Lok Sabha, The Government of India has issued
the following news release:
A 20-member Parliamentary Delegation from Armenia led by H.E. Mr.
Hovik Abrahamyan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic
of Armenia, called on Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Meira Kumar in Parliament
Library Building today.
On this occasion, Smt. Meira Kumar referred to the historical and
civilizational ties that Indians and Armenians have enjoyed. She said
that India attaches importance to its friendship with Armenia and both
countries enjoy excellent cooperative relationship at political,
official and cultural levels and between their peoples. India
appreciates the continuous support of Armenia to India's candidature
for UNSC's permanent membership and at other multilateral fora, she
said.
Smt. Kumar informed the visiting Delegation that the current visit of
Armenian Parliamentary delegation and the first ever goodwill visit of
delegation of MPs to Armenia last month have added another chapter in
bilateral relationship and provide fresh opportunity to revive active
cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries. She
was happy to note that an Armenia-India Parliamentary Friendship Group
comprising of MPs in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia
has been formed.
On trade and economic ties, Smt. Kumar said that despite excellent
political and cultural ties, bilateral trade and economic engagement
between India and Armenia remains far below its potential and that
there is need to explore ways to expand the bilateral trade and
investment activity. She observed that there is a complete absence of
investment from India into Armenia or vice versa. There is need to
correct this by moving towards a more mature economic relationship to
a genuine `partnership model', based on mutual investments and sharing
of experiences.
In response, H.E. Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan, President of the National
Assembly of the Republic of Armenia thanked Lok Sabha Speaker for the
excellent hospitality and hoped that the India-Armenia friendship will
go a long way to ensure mutual benefit to their peoples.
