ARMENIA'S OMBUDSMAN MAY BE FORCED TO RESIGN - LARISA ALAVERDYAN

Armenia's first Human Rights Defender (Ombudsperson) Larisa Alaverdyan
told Tert.am that Armenia's incumbent Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan may
be forced to resign.
Armenia's Ombudsman can only be relieved of his post in a number of
exceptional cases.
"The first, most widely practiced in Armenia, is that he will be
forced to resign. Now it depends on whether he will hold his ground,"
Alaverdyan said.
"The second, they have to initiate criminal proceedings against him.
The third exceptional case is that Armenia's Parliament can find the
grounds for discussing the issue," she added.
In its Wednesday issue, the Chorrord Ishkhanutyun newspaper commented
on the Ombudsman's scandalous report on the situation in Armenia's
judiciary.
Alaverdyan cannot say what particular pressure may be exerted on the
Ombudsman or how Karen Andreasyan is going to resist it.
"We are going to see it. I have passed this way. Each one acts as he
or she considers it a responsibility toward society rather than the
authorities. Karen Andreasyan's report was a long-expected one. It
contained the most accurate description," she said.
