    2.9% month-on-month inflation recorded in Armenia in January 2013


    YEREVAN, February 1. /ARKA/. Armenia recorded 2.9% inflation in
    January 2013, compared with December 2012, Gurgen Martirosyan, chief
    of the National Statistical Service's prices and international
    comparisons division, said on Friday.

    He said this inflation was mainly due to a 5.1% increase in prices for
    foods in January.

    `The 11.8-to-31.8-percent increase in prices for fruits, vegetables
    and potatoes directly impacted food prices in January,' he said. `In
    nine of the 13 food groups price rise ranged between 0.1% and 31.8%,
    while in other groups foods became 2.1-0.1% cheaper.'

    Prices for vegetables and potatoes sank 10.1% in January 2013,
    compared with January 2012, but rose 31.8%, compared with December
    2012.
    Martirosyan said that the country recorded a 3.6-percent year-on-year
    inflation in January 2012.

    In Yerevan, prices for vegetables and potatoes leapt 29.8% in January
    2013, compared with the previous month.

    Fruit prices grew in all the cities of Armenia - the price rice ranged
    between 3.9% and 13.3%.

    In Yerevan, fruit prices went 0.8% up in January 2013, compared with
    January 2012.

    Martirossyan also said that prices for dairy products slipped 2.7% in
    January 2013, compared with the same month of the previous year, but
    climbed 2.3% compared with December 2012.

    Prices for meat products jumped 3.5% in January 2013, compared with
    the same month of the previous year, and rose 1.0%, compared with
    December 2012.

    Nonfood prices slid 0.2% in January 2013, compared with December 2012,
    due to a 2.2% fall in prices for shoes and a 1.1% fall inn prices for
    clothes.

    Prices for services went 0.8% up as a result of a 1.2% increase in
    public transport fares, a 1.5% rise in tuition fees, 4.8% in fees for
    healthcare and 6.8% in prices for rest.

    Average rate of inflation in Armenia was 2.6% in 2012.

    In Dec 2012 compared with Dec 2011, some CIS member countries recorded
    deflation (Georgia 1.4%, Azerbaijan 0.3% and Ukraine0.2%). The highest
    inflation rate was recorded in Belarus - 21.8%. Inflation in the
    Commonwealth of Independent States averaged 2.3%. -0-
