As a result of mine clearing activities "The Halo Trust" British
non-governmental organization has been carrying out in Nagorno Karabakh
for 13 years the number of the accidents has incomparably decreased
and by the data of 2011-2012 no death was recorded in the Republic
at all, Nagorno Karabakh programme supervisor Nick Smart said in his
interview to "Azat Artsakh".
Last year 5 explosions of antitank, antipersonnel and some other
ammunition were recorded in the Republic because of which 6 people,
among them 2 children, got injured. By statistics from 1995 till 2012
270 explosions were recorded, 346 people, among them 91 children,
got injured, 74 people died.
As Nick Smart reported in 2013 they were going to complete mine
clearing activities in two areas of Martouni region as a result of
which the region would entirely be cleared of mines. These activities
will, however, continue in the regions of Hadrout, Martakert and
Askeran. One of the international funds expressed its readiness to
organize large-scale activities of mine clearing in Qashatagh region
as well.
