YEREVAN, Armenia - Officials in Nagorno-Karabakh say an Armenian
soldier has been killed by a sniper near the no-man's-land separating
the disputed territory from the rest of Azerbaijan.
Nagorno-Karabakh and some adjacent territory have been under the
control of Armenian soldiers and ethnic Armenian local troops since
the end of a six-year separatist war in 1994. A wide demilitarized
zone separates those forces from Azerbaijani forces.
Both sides report frequent shooting and attempted incursions from the
other side.
The Nagorno-Karabakh defence ministry said Saturday that a 37-year-old
soldier on duty at the zone's edge was killed by sniper fire from the
other side.
